i need to get over the idea that any urge i might have to try something new or to explore some different avenue is pointless because i’ll never be good enough or i’ll never find something i like.

Exactly! And here’s the thing, if you try something new, you are making new connections in your brain. So, even if you don’t master that thing, it has made an impression.
